Why? Because the way inflation is calculated now is not the same as back then. For example this article compares inflation to 1991 but if we were to calculate it the way they did back in 1991 it would be closer to double. Just look at the producer price index. The government should not be in charge of measuring inflation because it is extremely advantageous for the number to be low politically and financially. It’s like letting kids grade their own report cards… what do you think is going to happen.
